About me
My name is Bright Appiah-Brako, I am a professional classroom teacher. I am 38 years and married with 3 kids and a native of Adankrono-Kade in the Kwabibirem District of Eastern Region, Ghana. I had my primary education at Adankrono A. M. E Zion School and completed Junior Secondary School at Amma Nipaa Preparatory School, Kade. I attended St. Martin’s Senior High School for my secondary education and finally joined University of Cape Coast to have my first and second degrees in mathematics education. I currently teach at W. B. M Zion Senior High School, Old Tafo-Akim, where I teach both Elective and Core Mathematics with the learners’ age range between 15 – 20 years and formerly holds the position of head of Mathematics Department. Moreover, I have gained a lot of professional experience in teaching, particularly teaching learners with individual differences. Also, 12 years in the teaching field, workshops and trainings attended, being examiner for West African Examinations Council, and an executive member of Mathematical Association of Ghana, Eastern Regional Branch has helped me gained experience in teaching.
My educational philosophy of teaching and learning of mathematics is about procedures and practices that aid to improve the qualities of learners, their living, and societal conditions as a whole. Also, to train individuals capable of solving societal problems for the betterment of humankind. My educational philosophy is about using creative approaches in teaching by placing learners at the center of teaching and learning of mathematics. My experience so far as an educational philosopher is to identifying the potentials of learners and crafting an environment in which they could learn. Additionally, my class is well managed to ensure good conducive environment that seeks to address individual needs and promote academic excellence. I personally like teaching mathematics practically and making it student-centered, to help them gain basic principles of mathematics which they can apply to their everyday life activities. Hence making teaching and learning more practical for learner and motivate them to learn, to develop interest in studying mathematics without fear, panic and anxiety. The appropriate pedagogical skills I use in instructional period include group activity, individual activity and discussion methods for effective delivery of knowledge.
It is my desire to leave my homeland Ghana, to have more experience outside and study other cultures, beliefs, and share my experience gained with others. Better still, if given the opportunity, I will bring on board my experience, practical skills, theories and knowledge base in mathematics, and use available teaching and learning resources to impact good mathematical contents into the learners positively to help them love and understand mathematical concepts. Mathematics is about solving a perplexing situation or problem, therefore instructors should provide students with a sense of discipline; a sense of its scope, power, uses, and history. To effectively make change, the lesson must be well structured or organized. Also, the learners’ behaviour must be taken into consideration specifically their individual differences, personality characteristics, readiness and the maturational level. When given the chance I will structure my lesson well to suit individual differences and use my experience to effect change for instructional objectives to be achieved. However, it is important to arrange various topics in a systematical way and use related content to suit the knowledge base of the learners. Therefore, mathematics must be done at a level appropriate for the learner to understand. With instructional experience, learners will learn to value mathematics and have confidence in the ability to do mathematics.
